Discussion:
[Emc-users] Bull Nose Cutters

For much of the sort of thing that I make, a bull-nose cutter (ball nose
with a flat section on the end) would be ideal. They can do nearly anything
that a ball-nose can, with the additional ability to make flat horizontal
surfaces.

My CAM packages all know how to work with them, but I don't actually seem
to be able to see them on sale anywhere. (Or, at least, not in the UK)

Are these always ground in-house, or perhaps they have an alternative name
that I should try searching for?

Indeed. I think I need to need one, if you see what I mean.

Thanks all, I do at least now know where to find them.

them

The same need to need applies but this tool is the absolute best for hand
work on a carbide end mill

Interesting they only offer 1 micron spray; and no mention of a ceramic lapping wheel. A HSS or carbide hand graver would be finished on a ceramic wheel with 0.5 or 0.25 micron spray, rather than a diamond wheel.
Its a nice looking machine, and I like some aspects of its design, but the vertical wheel would not hold spray very well. That's why one of the favourite power hones for graver sharpening has a horizontal wheel (as does its main competitor).

Unless I need a sharp corner, I've switched over to them at work for most jobs.

A few others who sell them in the uk include:
shop-apt.co.uk (I tend to use for el-cheapo cutters)
cutwel.co.uk (use for my better cutters at home)
wnt.com (I use at work)

Corner radius end mill seems to be the usual description used over here.

And, unless cutting something hard, you don't need carbide.
I routinely use solid carbide in 1/8"
size, as they are dirt cheap. But, for anything bigger, I
use M42 or M57 cobalt HSS, which is a totally different
animal from usual HSS. I get at least 3 X more life out of
them, and the cost is only slightly above plain HSS.

Interesing why they say HRC45. It's too little obviously. A carbide tool
should be HRC75-80.

Must be just a seller knowing nothing about the item.

Be very careful - these tools may not be the best you can buy.
Don't stock up until you have had an opportunity to prove the tool.
