Discussion:
[Emc-users] Can't install from livecd (usb stick)

I was going to update my Emco F1 mill with the latest Linuxcnc running on Debian Wheezy. It is currently on an old Ubuntu that isn’t updated anymore. I have built a bootable USB stick using two different methods, one from my Mac using terminal commands and one from another Debian machine using the instructions on the Linuxcnc web site. Both times when trying to install from the menu I get stuck in this loop where it wants to find a CD Rom drive. I have tried many things found on the internet(s) when searching for "linuxcnc install usb stick tries to find CD Rom” none of which seem to work.

The problem is like this, only this solution fails saying “Invalid argument” to the mount command:

I haven’t had this problem in the past, not sure why it is happening. Any ideas?

Still fighting with this. I’ve never had so much problem installing Linuxcnc. I have tried everything, different USB sticks, building on several different machines using the several different methods and nothing I do seems to help. I still get stuck in this loop of the install trying to use a cdrom that doesn’t exist. Very frustrating.

Did you try disabling any CDROM drives listed in BIOS?

I’ve gone through the bios settings several times and believe I have everything but the bare minimum enabled. I have reset factory defaults as well to no avail. I am sure the CDROM is disabled.

I HAVE figure out that this is only happening on the Atom 330 (Intel D945GCLF2D mini-ITX Atom 2x1.6Ghz) system I am trying to load it on. If I put the same USB stick into a Atom D2800 (
Intel DN2800MT Mini-ITX) system it works.

I know that some older computers do not support booting from a USB. Have
you been able to verify that it can?
I am sorry I can't be of more help.

I hope someone else chimes in who can help more. Good luck!

Thanks Kurt,
I'm fairly certain that I originally built it using a USB stick (back in the day) with Ubuntu 10.04….

It could just be that the computer will not boot off the USB stick.

Remove the disk drive, attach it to another computer and install Linux unto
that drive then put the drive backing the PC. I've resorted to that trick
a few times and got Linux installed on a machine with no CD.

The other tick is to have a USB CD drive and then install from CD.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think you are both right, the system just won’t boot off USB. And in fact after thinking about it more I believe I built the original system off a DVD drive. That was back when bootable USB sticks were just getting started. I was thinking that installing onto a disk mounted to the a 2800 motherboard wouldn’t work because the hardware would be different, I’m sure it would work fine though now that I think about it. However, I decide to take the even harder road and am just replacing the older Atom with the newer 2800 board. I have it built now and Linuxcnc run fine. I now have to re-drill the mounting holes as the new board has to be oriented 90 degrees from the old one in order to accommodate the cabling. Not too bad though. It is the classic case of the new dishwasher dictating the need for a kitchen remodel…

Thanks,
-Tom

I didn't see a motherboard brand mentioned. Gigabyte are famous for having
bios that will not boot off of usb. The issue is partition size: <4gb will
work, as I recall. I was about to trash my gigabyte mobo until I found this
online somewhere.

I have built a bootable USB stick using two different methods, one from my Mac using terminal commands and one from another Debian machine using the instructions on the Linuxcnc web site.
I went round this loop several time last time I tried to install
LinuxCNC (on a PC that had already been successfully installed once).
In the end I decided that the simple solution was:
